The Essential Koran - (translated by) Thomas Cleary

Cleary doesn't really say why he chose to include the verses that he did. Most of the selected verses are concerned with heaven and hell and the doing of good deeds. Jihad, martyrdom, and details of Islamic life are not presented. This made the book less interesting to me because I was looking for those kind of answers. The book does have a good notes section which is helpful.
