For the Love of Animals - Kathryn Shevelow
The way people treated animals back in the 1700's was really horrific and didn't begin to improve until the mid-1800's when Martin's Act (1822) and a subsequent amendment (1835) provided legislative protection for many animals in Britain. This book covers early, mostly unsuccessful attempts to improve the legal rights of animals in Britain. Interesting reading, but a little dry.
