Devil's Gate - David Roberts

The Mormon handcart tragedy of 1856 is hardly known outside the LDS community. It involved the migration of European Mormons to Salt Lake City, first to Iowa City by train, then by hardcart the rest of the way. Many people died in the last two groups because, like the Donner Party, they left too late in the season. A well written and interesting book.
