The Road to Serfdom - F. A. Hayek

This classic explains why you don't want a collective form of government. It was originally published in 1944 for a British audience and uses Nazi Germany as an example of collectivism gone wrong. According to Hayek, socialism can eventually lead to totalitarianism if appropriate checks aren't put into the system. It's an excellent book that everyone should read.
