This Republic of Suffering - Drew Gilpin Faust

This is an excellent, well-researched, and scholarly text about death in the Civil War. Topics include the difficulties of war, burying the dead (Union vs Confederate), definition of a "good death", and naming and counting the dead. However, I overestimated my interest in this subject and it wasn't easy to read. It's well-written but sort of depressing.
